09/17:Systems Awareness and Impact in Education Workshop
Educational inequality, school consolidation, low student motivation: these challenges aren’t just one-time events, they’re persistent challenges driven by students, faculty, administrators, and parents narrowly defining “the problem” and acting on their siloed perspectives. While well-intentioned, actions are often ineffective, duplicate efforts, or generate unintended consequences. In this workshop, learn how NTU cultivated a holistic understanding of the challenges facing higher education and developed a strategy for action that could be broadly shared by their many stakeholders. Then, learn to apply the basics of systems thinking to evaluate and communicate the complex dynamics of an educational issue that is important to you.

09/24:En-Roads Climate Simulation
The climate crisis may already be here, but so too are a great many of the interventions we need to fight back. But with all the noise, how do we identify which technologies, policies, and investments will really make a difference? Is it investments in breakthrough energy technologies? Planting billions of trees? Or maybe the key is to slow down population growth. In this workshop, powered by the En-ROADS climate simulation model, roleplay key stakeholder groups and test your ideas about what makes effective climate action while challenging your ability to navigate competing interests toward a common vision for our future.

Each one of us has five basic human senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. The sensing organs associated with each sense send information to the brain to help us understand and perceive the world around us.
The first level of Awareness is a person’s knowledge that something exists, or understanding of a situation or subject in the present based on information or experience. To progress to a higher level, quality, or state of being aware, the essential step is to go beyond these five senses and design an Aha moment, a moment of sudden realization, inspiration, or reflection. In this workshop, we aim to create a pathway helping each individual progress from Vision to Visionary, and from Moment to Movement. We adopt Artful Thinking Pedagogy, developed by Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, with focus on experiencing or appreciating works of visual or performance art.
Evidence has shown that these routines help to sustain engagement and to realize this goal by activiating critical thinking and social emotional learning.
